The Cherry Dollface has been a major inspiration all along my pin-up journey. She was the first one to (virtually) teach me how to do my hair and style my clothes when I transitioned from teenage punk hardcore to glamourous adulthood. Although her Youtube channel is a gold mine for makeup and hair advice, her personal content is also so sincere and authentic. When I feel homesick, I still binge her channel just like you would watch Sex and the City as a sweet Proust’s Madeleine moment. She is on a mission to make every girl feeling pretty inside out.
To do so, she tours the world to teach hair and makeup to all of us. She seems to be such a generous sweetheart and I hope I will get to meet her in person one day. Cherry Dollface has tons of travel tips to share with us. On behalf of all of us, thank you again for your time and your precious support all through the years.
Your book Dollface Vintage is finally out, congrats! How will 2018 look like, any promotional tour planned?
No promotional tour— my publisher is a small independent house so we don’t really have the budget for that. But I will be doing a book release party during Viva Las Vegas on Wednesday at the Atomic Style Lounge!
Do you book your tours yourself? How do you manage setting up your European tours for example?
Yep! I went to business school so all of the bookings is simple to me. I am very organized! The internet is a great tool to help people travel independently.
You are a well-travelled lady indeed, what has been your most memorable trips so far?
Oh my gosh… there have been too many! I love travelling abroad. I love the culture in New Zealand. I love the people in Australia. I love the afternoon tea in England. I am really excited to see more things on my European tour in a few months! I just feel incredibly lucky to be able to travel at all. I treasure every second.
If a fairy godmother would come to you one day and grant you the wish to have the trip of your dreams what would it look like?
I would quit life and travel for 3 months around the entire world. I want to see everything!! Egypt, Dubai, Japan, Bali, Bora Bora, Greece…. All of it!
Let’s talk about style now! Here at Pinup Abroad, we love to exchange tips and tricks on how to be a perfect vintage wanderer. How would you describe your style while travelling?
I am probably the least vintage traveller! When I am on a tour, I am usually gone for 4-5 weeks at a time and I am travelling with my full hair and makeup kit so I only have one suitcase for my own things. I have to pack really light— I usually just stick with separates that I can mix and match. I also like adventures and when I am adventuring, I am really low maintenance. I can’t be bothered with worrying that my pretty clothes will get ruined or dirty… so I usually stick with jeans and a leather jacket. I only really go for vintage style during my classes.
What are The Cherry Dollface favourite items to bring along in her suitcase?
Separates! I also go light on shoes. I usually bring sandals, flats and sneakers. Sometimes I bring one small pair of black heels just in case. But I walk so much and work smh long hours on my feet, I rarely wear heels. I just bring lots of accessories and scarves since they are small and easy to pack!
Talking about brands, which ones do you find the most travel-friendly? (lightweight, no wrinkles, strong fabric..; etc)
Sourpuss makes this cute little-collared dresses that don’t wrinkle ever!! Those are always my go-to class dresses. I try to stay away from heavy cotton. I also bring a lot of solid basics and then a few cute patterned cardis to help mix things up. These are usually basic brands though— forever 21 or H&M.
We have seen you’re outfit is always on point while on the road but how do you manage to do your hair and makeup when you can’t carry all your beauty items?
I skimp on clothing, but I never ever skimp on beauty items! I have to bring my full hair and makeup kit when I am working so that helps. But I also never skimp on skincare. I always travel with mini versions of my favourite lotions and potions and masks. Flights and long hours do terrible things to the skin. I think skincare is the most important thing to make room for!
Moving on packing tips! How do you manage to bring a capsule wardrobe? What are your best packing tips?
Separates!! Haha. I also roll everything, You can fit so much more when you roll your clothes. I also avoid anything bulky. No fluffy dresses or crinoline and heavy jeans. I bring one heavy jacket that I carry on the plane and everything else in my luggage is lightweight— you can always layer if you are cold!
Last but not least, give us a quick tour of what’s hot to do for a Pin Up gal in Southern Cali.
Well, I am pretty much a boring old lady when I am home since I am gone so much. I just like to read, go on hikes, eat food and see my friends. But there is so much to do and see here! So much history and so many cool places to eat and drink.
