From New York to the Maldives, Rachel never misses a chance to explore the surrounding and taking pictures in gorgeous outfits. Non only she knows how to pull out a locely look, she is also an extremely kind person.
This lady is one fierce warrior as she is currently leading a war against breast cancer with a remarkable strength and positivity. We wishes her a speedy recovery and many travels to come !
Tell us a bit more about yourself, where are you from? where do you live ?
My name is Rachel, I currently live in Sheffield in the United Kingdom. I am a former nurse and a mother to my daughter Gabby. I have a huge passion for travel. I enjoy leading a healthy lifestyle, practicing yoga and love nothing more than practicing yoga in a beautiful destination. I am also very passionate about fashion particularly retro fashion and original vintage clothes. I enjoy jazz/ratpack style music, I am in my element in a jazz bar with a nice cocktail in hand.
What are the destinations on your 2018 bucket list?
There are so many places I would like to visit. When I have finished my chemotherapy we plan to go to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The Maldives is my little piece of paradise and I can’t think of anywhere more perfect to recover from this horrible treatment. We are also planning a trip to Thailand later in the year. I would love to visit Bali also but that’s probably on next years agenda.
You are a well-travelled lady indeed, what has been your most memorable trips so far? The Underwater restaurant seemed to be a dream !
Ohhh Wow there’s been so many! I am very fortunate to have traveled to some beautiful destinations over the years and stayed in some beautiful hotels. Certainly the under sea restaurant at Conrad Rangali Island Maldives was a memorable experience. Dining 5 meters below sea level, having all the marine life swim by as you are eating dinner is a moment to remember for sure. I would say the first time I travelled to the Maldives (I have been a few times since) was the most memorable trip back in 2008. It had always been a dream of mine to visit the Maldives, we stayed in Dubai for a 3 night on route in the world famous Burj Al Arab hotel, It was amazing! The sea plane transfer to the Maldives was an amazing experience too, flying over the atolls was breathtaking the first time. It really was a magical holiday and even now the beauty of the Maldives never gets old. Every time I return it is still as beautiful as the first time I visited in 2008.
If a fairy godmother would come to you one day and grant you the wish to have the trip of your dreams what would it look like?
I would literally pack up for 6 months and travel the world! There are so many places I want to visit including China, Japan, Vietnam these are all on my bucket list. I also would love to do another safari trip in Africa with a stay over at the Giraffe Manor Hotel in Nairobi on route to the safari lodge, that would be amazing!
Let’s talk about style now! Here at Pinup Abroad we love to exchange tips and tricks on how to be a perfect vintage wanderer. How would you describe your style while travelling?
I would describe my style as classic with a fun modern twist. I try to maintain my pinup look as much as possible when away, but a lot of what i wear depends on the destination of course.
Essentials would be red lipstick, cat eye sunglasses, a vintage style sunhat or winter hat depending on the destination. I would also take hair flowers, retro style jewellery, these are all things that add instant ‘retro vibes’ to your look without taking up lots of room in the case.
I’m a huge fan of ‘wearing a landscape’ when I’m away, for example when in the Maldives I have a lovely silk maxi dress with an underwater print of coral and star fish. When I was in New York at Christmas I wore a midi skirt with a New York skyscraper print on it and Kate Spade yellow taxi shoes! I had so many comments on my outfit which was lovely! When I visit my Capital London, I have a London red bus skirt that I wear often, I just think it adds a fun element to the whole thing.
I think the main thing though is to dress for the destination, many pinup clothes can be tight and clingy which you don’t want in hot and humid environment. If it’s an island destination then retro swimsuits/bikinis are a must with stylish kimono style cover ups. In the evening my style tends to switch era more to the 70s with flowing maxi dresses, that kind of thing.
In a hot city I would wear strapless pieces, anything to keep cool so strapless/ halter dresses or strapless tops with a circle skirt or shorts. For cold destinations ie NYC at Christmas time I find that layering is key! Lots of thin layers under a chic pencil dress, topped of by my collectif Pearl coat = instant vintage, instant glamour and still very warm.
What are your favourite items to bring along in your suitcase ?
These would be cat eye sunglasses, hair accessories flowers/headscarves a vintage sunhat or winter hat as the case maybe, and of course an outfit that included the landscape of where I am visiting.
Talking about brands, which ones do you find the most travel friendly ?
I tend to favour brands like Collectif , Vivienne Of Holloway, Violets In May as well as my true vintage pieces. I like breathable fabrics such as cottons, silks and linens but I think if clothes are packed well this keeps creasing to a minimum.
Another #flashback as I’m not feeling well today, so enjoy some #mondayblues and a #redswimsuit 🤣🤣💋💋 Happy Monday everyone 💋💋 . . . . . #pinup #pinupgirl #pinuplife #dailypinup #pinupoftheday #pinupoftheweek #pinuplifestyle #pinupsagainstbodyshaming #retro #retrostyle #classic #vintagestyle #vintagelife #picoftheday #beachbody #curves #curvesaresexy #curvygirl #beachstyle #glamour #me #selfie #fun #onepiece #one_vintage_soul 💋💋
We have seen on your Instagram that you’re outfit is always on point while on the road but how do you manage to do your hair and makeup when you can’t carry all your beauty items ?
I think it is really important to look after your skin whilst traveling as it can take its toll, so I wouldn’t compromise on my usual skin care routine, I tend to put my products into smaller bottles to save on weight and space. Makeup wise red lipstick is a must as are Black eyeliner and mascara and a foundation with added sun protection. As far as hair is concerned I usually swear by ‘donut rings’ for quick chic bun styles, adding hair flowers for more glam!
Moving on packing tips ! How do you manage to bring a capsule wardrobe ? What are your best packing tips ?
I think it’s important to choose items that sit in the same colour spectrum so you can mix and match pieces, either that or colours that work well together ie red white and blue classic and stylish.
I would choose a skirt that can be worn with 3 different tops and the same tops can be matched with Capri pants so mixing and matching to create different looks. I always roll my clothes, I find the clothes crease less this way and you can fit more in the case.
If I have delicate jewellery, brooches for example, I would roll them in with the clothes for added protection. I pack toiletries into smaller bottles then put the toiletries bag into a carrier bag in case of any leakages. I would take an additional bag for dirty laundry.
Last but not least, give us a quick tour of what’s hot to do for a Pin Up gal in you hometown ?
Sheffield is a large vibrant City on the edge of the National Peak District, we are surrounded by beautiful countryside, we also have many bars, restaurants and shops including many vintage shops. There is a large area in Sheffield named ‘the antiques quarter’, an area that’s solely designated to antique shops selling antique furniture, upcycled furniture, vintage clothing and lots of quirky one off pieces, I love going there!
